Old Road Town

Saint Kitts, Saint Kitts and Nevis

Why visit Old Road Town?

Old Road Town sits on the leeward (Caribbean) west coast of Saint Kitts, in the parish of Saint Thomas Middle Island, and carries an outsized place in the island's history: it was the site of the first permanent British settlement in the Caribbean, established under Sir Thomas Warner in 1624, and served as the island's first capital before the seat of government moved to Basseterre. The settlement grew up where a sheltered roadstead met fertile, well-watered slopes running up toward the central mountains, and the area around it became some of the earliest planted sugar land on the island.

Today Old Road is a quiet coastal village strung along the main island road, but it remains one of the richest spots on Saint Kitts for heritage. Just inland are Romney Manor and the Wingfield Estate, an old plantation site at the foot of the rainforest, and the village is the gateway to the well-maintained rainforest trail that climbs above Romney Manor along the Wingfield River. The famous restored British fortress at Brimstone Hill — the "Gibraltar of the Caribbean" — lies a short distance up the coast to the north.

The climate is tropical: warm and humid year-round, with daytime highs typically in the upper 20s°C. The drier, more comfortable season runs roughly December to April; the wetter months and the Atlantic hurricane season fall between June and November, with September and October the months most worth avoiding for storm risk. The village itself is compact and easily walked, with the historic and rainforest sights reached by a short drive or taxi inland.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB IATA), on the edge of Basseterre, which receives flights from a number of cities in the USA and Canada. Old Road Town lies on the western coast roughly a 15–20 minute drive from the airport. There is no airport bus; taxis meet arriving flights, and you should agree the fare in advance and confirm whether the quoted price is in EC or US dollars (1 US dollar is worth about 2.7 EC dollars).

By Car / Road

Old Road Town is on the main coastal ring road of Saint Kitts, about a 15-minute drive west of Basseterre and a short way south of Brimstone Hill Fortress and Sandy Point. Driving is on the left, and rental cars are available with a locally issued temporary driving licence. Public buses — privately owned vans that run along the main road during the day — pass through the village; flag them from the roadside and confirm the fare with the driver, again checking whether it is in EC or US dollars.

The village core is small and walkable, but the heritage sights sit inland and uphill, so most visitors use a taxi or rental car to reach them. Buses (shared vans) run frequently along the main road earlier in the morning and later in the afternoon and thin out around midday; they are inexpensive but follow the coast road rather than the inland lanes. Taxis act more like private hire — agree the price up front, in writing if possible, and clarify the currency. A ride-hailing app, "Drop SKN Ride," exists but is not reliably operational. Take normal care on the narrow, winding inland roads.

What are the things to do?

  • Romney Manor — a historic plantation estate inland of Old Road, set in lush gardens that include a vast old saman (rain) tree; home to Caribelle Batik, where hand-dyed batik fabrics are made and sold. A short drive up from the village.
  • Wingfield Estate — adjacent to Romney Manor, the ruins of one of the island's oldest sugar and rum estates, including old works and stonework on the early settlement land.
  • Carib petroglyphs — pre-Columbian rock carvings near Old Road, a reminder of the island's Amerindian inhabitants before European settlement.
  • Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park — the UNESCO-listed British fortification once called the Gibraltar of the Caribbean, a short drive north up the coast. Open roughly 09:30–17:30; admission about US$15 or EC$40, credit cards accepted; there is a small museum within the fortress.

The rainforest behind Old Road offers some of the best-marked walking on Saint Kitts: a well-maintained trail above Romney Manor follows and crosses the Wingfield River, complete with ropes and steps, and is widely considered the island's best-marked path. More demanding hikes — up toward the rim of Mount Liamuiga's crater, or the historic Old Military Trail that crossed the island from Romney Manor over to the Atlantic side — start from this part of the island; a guide is recommended for the less-travelled routes. The estate gardens and batik studio at Romney Manor make for an easy half-day, and the area's history and birdlife (including the island's introduced green vervet monkeys) reward a slow visit.

Where to eat?

Eating in Old Road itself is low-key — a handful of small local spots and roadside bars serving Kittitian home cooking such as saltfish, stewed chicken, rice and peas, and fresh fish. For a wider choice you are within easy reach of two clusters: the upscale Royal Palm at Ottley's Plantation around the island, and the much larger concentration of restaurants in Basseterre (Circus Grill, Ballahoo, Serendipity, Fisherman's Wharf) and on the Frigate Bay strip. Seafood, goat water (a spiced stew) and conch are local staples worth seeking out.

Where to drink?

As across Saint Kitts, the easy local drinks are bottled island sodas and beer (Carib is the regional lager), and rum — fitting given the old Wingfield distillery heritage nearby. Small roadside bars in and around the village serve cold drinks, and beach bars cluster further south on the peninsula. Tap water on Saint Kitts is generally treated, but many visitors prefer bottled water; confirm locally if unsure.

Where to stay?

  • Budget: Small guesthouses and self-catering rooms in and around Old Road and neighbouring villages offer the cheapest stays.
  • Mid-range: There are no large hotels in the village itself; mid-range options are more readily found at Frigate Bay (e.g. Timothy Beach Resort) a short drive away.
  • Upscale / heritage: Ottley's Plantation Inn, a converted great-house estate elsewhere on the island, is the nearest heritage-style upscale option; the St. Kitts Marriott Resort at Frigate Bay is the largest full-service resort.

What should you buy?

The signature buy here is Caribelle Batik at Romney Manor — hand-printed batik clothing, sarongs and wall hangings made on site, the best-known craft product of this part of the island. The estates also sell local crafts and souvenirs. For general shopping, groceries and a wider range of goods, head to Basseterre. Prices in shops are generally fixed rather than bargained.

Where to go next?

  • Brimstone Hill Fortress (a few minutes north) — the island's grandest historic site, the UNESCO-listed fortress.
  • Sandy Point Town (just north up the coast) — one of the larger west-coast settlements.
  • Basseterre (about 15 minutes east) — the capital, with the Circus clock, shopping, ferries and dining.
  • Frigate Bay (about 20 minutes southeast) — the island's resort and nightlife strip with two beaches.
  • Mount Liamuiga / the rainforest interior — for the island's most rewarding hiking, reached from above Old Road.
  • Nevis (via ferry from Basseterre, about 40 minutes) — the quieter sister island.
