About Saint Paul's

Saint Paul's is a village in the far north of the island of Saint Kitts, in the parish of Saint Paul Capisterre, near the island's northern tip and the neighbouring village of Dieppe Bay Town. It lies within the coastal belt that rings the island's central mountain range, where most of Saint Kitts's villages are concentrated, and is a quiet, working rural community rather than a tourist resort. Like the rest of the island, it sits under a tropical climate tempered by sea breezes, with the driest months from December to April and a wetter, hurricane-season stretch from May to November.

Saint Paul's shares the island's British colonial heritage — traffic drives on the left — and its surroundings of green hills, former sugar lands and Caribbean coastline. For travellers it serves mainly as a glimpse of everyday northern Kittitian life and as a waypoint along the island's main coastal road toward Dieppe Bay and the volcanic high country of Mount Liamuiga.

How to reach

By Plane

The island's only airport is Robert L. Bradshaw International (SKB) near Basseterre, with flights from a number of cities in the USA and Canada and seasonal service from London Gatwick. From the airport, Saint Paul's is reached by taxi or by island bus via Basseterre toward the north of the island.

By Train

By Car / Road

Saint Paul's is on the main coastal road in the north of Saint Kitts. By public transport it is reached on the island's northern/eastern bus routes from Basseterre; buses (green plates starting "H") are cheap and can be flagged along the main road during the day. Taxis (yellow plates starting "T") are reliable but pricier — agree the fare and currency upfront. Rental cars with a temporary local licence are available on the island.

The village is small and easily covered on foot. For travel along the coast or back toward Basseterre, the island's micro buses are the cheapest option, flaggable on the main road during daytime hours (service generally ends by about 7–8PM). Taxis serve door-to-door trips; confirm whether the fare is in US or EC dollars before setting off.

Things to do

  • Kittitian Hill / Belle Mont — the village's parish, Saint Paul Capisterre, is home to the Kittitian Hill estate, a hillside of restored Caribbean chattel-style cottages and a working organic farm spilling down toward the black-sand coast at Dieppe Bay, with sweeping views up to Mount Liamuiga. The grounds and farm are the area's signature sight.

  • Mount Liamuiga backdrop — the dormant volcano (1,156 m), the island's high point, rises directly behind the village; its forested slopes and the crater-rim trail begin in this northern uplands.

  • Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park — the nearest major monument, the UNESCO-listed "Gibraltar of the Caribbean," is a drive southwest along the coast (open 09:30–17:30; US$15 / EC$40).

  • Golf at Irie Fields — the Kittitian Hill estate has an 18-hole edible-landscape golf course (designed around Ian Woosnam) where the fairways are planted with fruit trees and herbs; one of the more unusual rounds in the Caribbean.

  • Farm-to-table experiences — Belle Mont Farm runs garden tours and sea-to-fork dining drawing on its organic plots.

  • Hike Mount Liamuiga — the crater-rim climb (allow about 4 hours up and back, guide recommended) is one of the island's best walks and starts from this northern district.

  • Coastal touring — the village sits on the scenic northern loop toward Dieppe Bay and Sandy Point.

Food & Dining

The standout dining nearby is at Belle Mont Farm / Kittitian Hill in the parish: The Kitchen at Belle Mont Farm, set high on the hillside with mountain-and-sea views, and The Mill, both serving sea-to-fork Caribbean cooking — fresh pot fish, jerk pork and produce from the estate's own gardens (upscale; reservations advised). For everyday food, village cook-shops serve Kittitian staples, and the fishing village of Dieppe Bay just north has the long-running Golden Lemon restaurant and casual beach eateries. The island's wider dining is in Basseterre and Frigate Bay.

Cafes & Nightlife

Drinking life in the village means a couple of small roadside rum shops serving locally bottled Carib beer and soft drinks rather than any nightlife scene; the bar at Belle Mont Farm offers a more polished setting up at Kittitian Hill. As across the island, the unofficial national drink is "Ting with a Sting" (local Ting grapefruit soda with a local rum such as CSR). Tap water in inhabited areas is generally treated, though many visitors prefer bottled water.
