Sandy Point Town

Saint Kitts, Saint Kitts and Nevis

Why visit Sandy Point Town?

Sandy Point Town sits on the northwestern Caribbean coast of Saint Kitts, in the parish of Saint Anne Sandy Point, and is one of the island's principal towns after the capital, Basseterre. It lies at the western end of the island's main coastal road, in the less-steep coastal belt where most of Saint Kitts's villages are found, beneath the central mountain range. Like the rest of the island, the town carries a British colonial heritage — driving is on the left and the architecture reflects the island's long history of changing hands between Britain and France.

The town's chief draw is its setting beside Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, the UNESCO-listed British fortification known as the "Gibraltar of the Caribbean," which rises just outside the town. Sandy Point is a working coastal community rather than a resort, giving visitors a more local, everyday slice of Kittitian life than the cruise-focused capital or the Frigate Bay resort strip.

The climate is tropical and steady, tempered by sea breezes, with the driest and most comfortable months from December to April and a wetter season (May to November) that overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest and only airport on the island is Robert L. Bradshaw International (SKB), near Basseterre, with flights from a number of cities in the USA and Canada plus seasonal service from London Gatwick. From the airport, Sandy Point Town is reached by taxi or by the island's western bus route via Basseterre.

By Car / Road

Sandy Point Town is on the main coastal road on the western side of the island. By public transport, take the "Basseterre to Sandy Point" bus, which travels west starting from the Ferry Terminal in Basseterre. Buses (green plates starting "H") are cheap and flaggable along the main road; taxis (yellow plates starting "T") are reliable but pricier — agree the fare and currency (US or EC dollars) upfront. Rental cars with a temporary local licence are also available on the island.

The town itself is small and walkable. For travel along the coast and back toward Basseterre, the island's micro buses are the cheapest option, flaggable on the main road during daytime hours (service generally ends by about 7–8PM). Taxis are available for door-to-door trips; confirm whether the fare is quoted in US or EC dollars. A ride-hailing app, "Drop SKN Ride," exists on the island but reportedly does not function reliably.

What are the things to do?

  • Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park — the UNESCO-listed British fortification once called the "Gibraltar of the Caribbean," extensively restored, with a small museum inside; open 09:30–17:30, admission US$15 or EC$40 (credit cards accepted). It stands on the high ground just outside Sandy Point Town and offers commanding views over the coast and neighbouring islands.

The mountainous interior near Sandy Point offers rainforest hiking — most trails are not well marked, so a guided tour is recommended for anyone unfamiliar with the island. Brimstone Hill Fortress is the area's signature half-day visit, combining history with panoramic coastal views. The town also makes a base for exploring the island's northwestern coast and Caribbean-side beaches.

Where to eat?

Sandy Point's eateries are casual, local and inexpensive (most mains EC$15–35 / US$6–13):

  • Annie Jones Bakery — a long-standing local bakery for fresh bread, pastries and patties; a cheap breakfast or snack stop.
  • Pioneer Pizza — straightforward pizzas, a reliable casual option in town.
  • King's Snack — a small spot serving Caribbean plates and snackette fare.
  • CocoPlums Garden Bar & Grill — relaxed garden bar-and-grill with food and a local atmosphere.
  • Bill A Vybez Bar, Snackette & Grill — informal grill and snackette for grilled chicken, fish and drinks.

For a wider choice of restaurants, the island's main clusters are in Basseterre and the Frigate Bay strip.

Where to drink?

Local roadside bars throughout the island's towns serve locally bottled soda and beer, and Sandy Point's coastal setting is typical of that pattern. The island's unofficial national drink is "Ting with a Sting," a local Ting grapefruit soda spiked with a local rum such as CSR. Tap water in the main inhabited areas is generally treated, though many visitors prefer bottled water.

Small village shops along the main road stock cold drinks and basics. For duty-free shopping, the craft market and Caribelle Batik clothing, head to Basseterre (about 30 min east by bus, roughly EC$3) or to the Caribelle Batik workshop at Romney Manor, a short drive south near Old Road.
