Suzdal
Vladimirskaya oblast', Russia
Why visit Suzdal?
Suzdal (Су́здаль) is the main historic town of Central Russia, about 25 km north of Vladimir. It was once the capital of several Russian principalities. During Soviet times it earned a federally protected status, which limited development in the area. Thus the place remains largely the same as ages ago, preserving a great number of stunning examples of Russian architecture from the 13th–19th centuries: the Kremlin, several monasteries, countless white-stone temples, complemented by a Museum of Wooden Architecture.
Although having just under 10,000 residents, Suzdal retains a rural look with streams and meadows everywhere and chicken and livestock a common sight on the streets, some of which remain unpaved. This juxtaposition of stunning medieval architecture with its pastoral setting lends Suzdal a picturesque charm. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most interesting of the Golden Ring cities.
Tourist high season is summer and mid-winter, with numbers of visitors peaking at weekends and holidays. During off season the city is quiet even on weekends without losing much of its charm.

What are the things to do?
Suzdal is a small town with a population of ten thousand people, predominantly wooden buildings and a huge number of stone churches and monasteries.
Suzdal Kremlin:
- Cathedral of the Nativity Theotokos (Rozhdestvensky Sobor) — Built in 1222, rebuilt several times. Inside are preserved paintings from the 13th–17th centuries and the 13th-century Golden Gate. Cathedral's necropolis contains burials of princely and boyar families from the 12th–17th centuries. Belfry built in 1635 opposite the cathedral. Admission approximately 400 RUB.
- Archbishop's Chambers (Archiereiskie Palaty) — 15th–18th centuries. Consists of three buildings connected by passages and galleries. The 17th-century cross chamber now hosts a museum with a model of ancient Suzdal and recreated 18th-century interiors.

The interior has plain white stone walls. The convent is one of the richest in Russia and is the burial vault for twenty nuns of noble birth.
- Monastery of the Presentation (Svyato-Vvedensky Nikonov Monastery) — Contains remains of two 17th-century churches in Russian style, restored by monks.
Museum of Wooden Architecture:
Located in a riverside meadow, featuring relocated wooden churches, windmills, and peasant houses from various parts of Russia. Possibly the best in Central Russia.
Other Churches:
- Churches with concave tents — Unique to Suzdal, found nowhere else. Several examples outside the town centre.
- Church of the Assumption (Uspenskaya Tserkov') — Kremlyovskaya str. 17th century, Naryshkin Baroque style.
- Church of St. Nicholas (Nikolskaya Tserkov') — Built 1729–1739, one of five Suzdal churches with the distinctive "Suzdal tune" bell tower.
Walk slowly through the town, getting away from the crowds to find churches on the outskirts. Visit the Monastery of St. Euthymius for bell-listening sessions. Take a day trip to Kideksha village, featuring a real pre-Mongolian Church on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Swim in the Kamenka River in summer. Attend the Suzdal Cucumber Festival in August.
