Why visit Vilyuysk?
Vilyuysk is a town of roughly 10,000 people on the Vilyuy River in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). It is one of the oldest Russian settlements in Yakutia, founded in 1634 as a Cossack ostrog (fort). The town served as the administrative centre of the Vilyuy Okrug and played an important role in the Russian colonisation of western Yakutia.
Vilyuysk is known as the birthplace of physicist Nikolai Udaltsov and as a centre for Vilyuy Yakut culture. The Vilyuy River, the largest tributary of the Lena, flows past the town through wide taiga-lined valleys. The surrounding area supports cattle breeding, horse herding, and small-scale gold mining.
For travellers, Vilyuysk provides a window into historic Yakut settlement patterns and the Vilyuy River way of life. The town is accessible but remote, requiring deliberate planning to reach.
