Why visit Olyokminsky Nature Reserve?
The Olyokminsky Nature Reserve (Olyokminskiy Zapovednik) is one of the largest protected areas in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), covering approximately 8,470 square kilometres of pristine taiga forest in the Lena-Aldan interfluve region. Established in 1984, the reserve protects old-growth Siberian larch forest, river ecosystems of the Olyokminka and Tatta rivers, and a range of rare and endangered species including the Siberian tiger (at the extreme edge of its range), brown bear, sable, wolverine, and the white-backed woodpecker.
The reserve lies in the southern part of Yakutia, roughly 800 km south of Yakutsk, with the town of Olyokminsk serving as the nearest gateway. The landscape is characterised by flat-topped larch taiga, river floodplains, and marshy lowlands — a classic Central Yakutian environment. The reserve also holds cultural significance for the Evenki and Yakut peoples who have lived alongside these forests for centuries.
For travellers, the Olyokminsky Reserve offers guided wilderness experiences in one of the last great taiga landscapes — wildlife observation, river expeditions, and nature photography in a setting virtually untouched by development.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By road
The reserve is accessible from Olyokminsk (the nearest town) via regional roads. Olyokminsk itself is connected to Yakutsk by the federal highway (roughly 800 km south of the capital).
By river
In summer, boats travel from Yakutsk to Olyokminsk along the Lena River, and from there into the reserve along the Olyokminka River.
Within the reserve, travel is by foot, canoe, or guided vehicle along forest tracks. River expeditions by inflatable boat are a common way to access remote areas.
What are the things to do?
The reserve's main attractions are its old-growth taiga forest — towering Siberian larch trees, some several centuries old — and its river systems teeming with fish and waterfowl. Guided wildlife observation tours target brown bears, moose, wolves, sable, and, at the southern edge, the elusive Siberian tiger. The Olyokminka River offers scenic canoe expeditions through untouched wilderness.
Activities and experiences include guided tours, outdoor excursions, and seasonal events specific to this destination. Local outfitters can arrange tailored experiences based on the time of year and visitor interests.
