Why visit Srednekolymsk?

Srednekolymsk is a small town of roughly 3,000 people on the left bank of the Kolyma River in the northeastern Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Founded in 1644 as a Cossack ostrog, it is one of the oldest Russian settlements in the extreme northeast of Siberia. The town served historically as a fur-trading post and administrative centre for the Kolyma region.

The Kolyma River, one of the great waterways of the Russian Far East, flows through a landscape of tundra and taiga here. The surrounding area is extremely remote, with no year-round road connection to the rest of Russia. Srednekolymsk's economy is based on reindeer herding, fishing, and small-scale mining.

For travellers, Srednekolymsk is one of the most isolated settlements in Russia, offering a genuine frontier experience. The Kolyma River setting, Indigenous Even and Yukaghir cultures, and the sheer remoteness make it a destination for dedicated adventure travellers.
