Why visit Pinezhsky Nature Reserve?
Pinezhsky Nature Reserve (Pinezsky Zapovednik) is a protected natural area in Arkhangelsk Oblast, located in the Pinega River basin approximately 400 km southeast of Arkhangelsk. Established in 1974, the reserve covers an area of about 51,500 hectares of pristine taiga forest, rivers, and karst landscapes. The reserve is most famous for its spectacular karst caves, particularly the Golubinsky Proval — the largest cave in the oblast, which is open to tourists and especially dramatic in winter when ice formations fill its chambers.
The Pinega River valley is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the Russian North, with steep banks, dense boreal forests, and numerous lakes and bogs. The reserve protects populations of brown bear, elk, wolverine, and various bird species including the endangered white-tailed eagle. The surrounding area is extremely sparsely populated, with scattered villages that maintain traditional northern Russian ways of life.
The climate is subarctic continental with long cold winters (-15°C to -25°C) and short cool summers (12–18°C). The caves are accessible year-round but are most spectacular in winter (December–March) when ice stalactites and stalagmites form inside. Summer visits offer the best conditions for hiking and river activities.
