Severodvinsk
Arkhangel'skaya oblast', Russia
Why visit Severodvinsk?
Severodvinsk is a city of just under 200,000 inhabitants in Arkhangelsk Oblast, located on the coast of the White Sea approximately 35 km west of Arkhangelsk. The city is the center of Russian submarine construction and home to the Northern Fleet, making it one of the most strategically important military cities in Russia. Because of its military significance, a special permit is required for non-Russian citizens to enter the city — this is a strict restriction and visitors should verify current requirements before planning a trip.
Founded in 1936 as a shipbuilding center, Severodvinsk grew rapidly during the Soviet era as the primary site for nuclear submarine production. The city's identity remains closely tied to the shipyard, which continues to build and repair submarines and surface vessels for the Russian Navy. Despite its military character, Severodvinsk has a small-town atmosphere with tree-lined streets, a modest waterfront, and the quiet rhythms of a northern industrial city.
The climate mirrors that of nearby Arkhangelsk — long, cold winters with temperatures reaching -25°C and short summers with highs around 18°C. The White Sea coast means persistent winds and frequent fog in autumn. The city is best visited in summer (June–August) when daylight is long and conditions are mild enough for walking and coastal excursions.
