Shenkursk

Arkhangel'skaya oblast', Russia

Why visit Shenkursk?

Shenkursk is a small historic town in the northern part of Arkhangelsk Oblast, located on the right bank of the Vychegda River approximately 350 km northeast of Arkhangelsk. Founded in the 14th century, Shenkursk was historically an important trading post on the Vychegda River route and served as a regional administrative center. The town has a population of roughly 5,000, making it one of the smaller settlements in the oblast.

Shenkursk retains a quiet, traditional atmosphere characteristic of northern Russian towns that have seen limited modern development. The town features several historic wooden churches and merchant buildings, though many are in varying states of preservation. The surrounding landscape is flat taiga forest with the wide Vychegda River providing the main visual and practical axis through the area. The town's isolation has preserved much of its traditional character.

The climate is subarctic with long cold winters (-15°C to -25°C) and short cool summers (12–18°C). The Vychegda River is navigable during summer months, and the town is best visited in June–August when conditions are most favorable.
