Timiș

Timiș is a county in western Romania, on the border with Hungary and Serbia, in the historical region of Banat, with its capital and largest city at Timișoara. It is Romania's largest county by land area and among its most populous. The terrain is dominated by plains across the western and central county, rising to the Poiana Ruscă Mountains (up to about 1,374 m) in the east; the Timiș and Bega rivers are the main waterways. Timișoara itself is the country's fifth-largest city and a multicultural center historically home to numerous ethnic groups and religious denominations — it played a pivotal role as the starting point of the 1989 Romanian Revolution.

Timișoara is the county's transport hub, with rail and road connections to the other main towns, including Lugoj, Sânnicolau Mare, and Jimbolia.

Timișoara's multicultural old town and its role as the starting point of the December 1989 revolution that ended communist rule in Romania make it the county's centerpiece. The Poiana Ruscă Mountains in the east offer hiking terrain.
