About Faget

Făget (meaning "beech forest" in Romanian) is a town in eastern Timiș County, Banat, located 98 km from Timișoara and 33 km from Lugoj. It sits at the contact area of the Lugoj Hills with the Lugoj Plain, on the upper course of the Bega River. The town administers ten villages and has a history dating back to a medieval fortress first documented in 1548.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airport is Timișoara Traian Vuia International Airport, about 100 km away. From there, take a rental car or a train from Timișoara to Lugoj, then onward to Făget.

By Train

Făget is on CFR line 212 (Lugoj–Făget–Ilia). Regular trains connect it with Lugoj (33 km) and Timișoara (98 km).

By Car / Road

Făget is on national road DN68A, which connects Lugoj (33 km west) with Deva (68 km east). From Timișoara, take the E70 to Lugoj then DN68A east.

Făget is a compact town best explored on foot. Taxis are available for longer journeys. Local buses connect to the surrounding villages.

Things to do

  • The Wooden Church of Povârgina — a historic wooden church in one of the town's constituent villages. Much of it burned in early 2015, but restoration was expected to be completed in 2026.

  • The Wooden Church of Bătești — another traditional wooden church in the area.

  • Traian Vuia Museum — a museum dedicated to Traian Vuia, the Romanian inventor and aviation pioneer, located in the village of his birth (now named after him).

  • Românești Cave (Peștera Românești) — the second-largest cave in Timiș County, with a total development of 1,450 m arranged on three levels. Famous for its great acoustics and an annual October concert organized by the Speotimiș Speleological Association.

  • Cassina Casino — a historic casino building in the town centre.

  • Spring of Miron Monastery (Hot Pond) — a monastery with a thermal water spring at a constant temperature of 18°C, located at the foothills of the Poiana Ruscă Mountains.

  • Surduc Lake — the largest lake in Timiș County (460 hectares), created by a dam built in 1972. Fishing is permitted (carp, pike, bream, crucian carp). The lake also supplies drinking water to the Timișoara area.
