Why visit Ceahlau National Park?

Ceahlău National Park (Parcul Național Ceahlău) covers 7,742 hectares of the Ceahlău Massif in western Neamț County, Moldavia, Romania. Protected since 1926 and established as a national park in 1955, the park centers on an isolated conglomerate mountain block rising above the Bistrița River valley and Lake Izvorul Muntelui. Two main peaks dominate the high ridge: Ocoșul Mare (1,907 m) and Toaca (1,904 m).

The landscape features vertical conglomerate pillars, glacial cirques, alpine limestone plateaus, and forests of beech, fir, and spruce. Wildlife across the park includes chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), brown bears, grey wolves, Eurasian lynx, capercaillie, and golden eagles. Flora ranges from edelweiss on high cliffs to endemic Carpathian bellflowers in subalpine meadows.

The massif carries long-standing significance in Romanian culture. Pre-Christian traditions linked the mountain to the Dacians, while 19th-century Moldavian writers and painters documented its distinctive rock formations.

Temperatures vary significantly between the valley floor and the upper ridge. In valley resorts like Durău (780 m), summer highs reach 20°C to 25°C, while the alpine plateau above 1,700 m averages 8°C to 14°C during the day, with sudden weather changes and heavy afternoon rain.
