Piatra Neamt
Neamț, Romania
Why visit Piatra Neamt?
Piatra Neamt is a city in the mountainous part of Moldavia, eastern Romania, nestled among forested peaks at the foot of the Ceahlau Massif. With its tree-lined boulevards, hillside neighbourhoods, and a compact historic centre, it has a small-town atmosphere that belies its role as the county seat of Neamt. The city is often cited as one of the most beautiful and vibrant urban centres in all of Moldavia.
The surrounding mountains — Cozla, Pietricica, and Cernegura — form a natural amphitheatre around the city and contain a paleontological reserve notable for Oligocene-era fossil fishes. The city's history stretches back to antiquity, with the Batca Doamnei fortress (Petrodava) on a hilltop southwest of the centre dating to the 1st century BC. During the medieval period, Piatra Neamt served as a secondary residence for Moldavian voivodes, and Stephen the Great built a princely court here in the 15th century.
The climate is continental, with warm summers (average highs around 28°C in July) and cold, snowy winters. Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant, making them ideal for walking the city's many parks and museum circuits.

The nearest major airport is Iasi (IAS), approximately 120 km to the northeast, with connections to Bucharest, London, Rome, and other European cities. From Iasi, buses and minibuses to Piatra Neamt run regularly (approximately 2.5 hours). Bacau Airport (BCM) is about 100 km to the south, though it has fewer international routes.
By Train
Piatra Neamt station is served by direct trains from Bucharest (an InterCity and a Rapid, approximately 5-6 hours), and regional trains from Iasi (approximately 2 hours). The CFR (Romanian Railways) website has timetables at cfrcalatori.ro. A direct train from Cluj-Napoca connects via the Trans-Romanian railway.
By Car / Road
From Bucharest, drive approximately 340 km via the A3 and E85 northward through Buzau and Focsani, then continue on DN15 through the Bistrita Valley. The drive takes roughly 5 hours. From Iasi, the route via DN15 and DN2 covers 120 km in about 2.5 hours. From Cluj-Napoca, the drive is approximately 300 km (5-6 hours) via DN15.

Taxis are inexpensive but can be tricky: drivers sometimes hide the meter or forget to turn it on. Always request the meter be activated before setting off, and negotiate the fare beforehand if you prefer. A 5-minute ride from the outskirts to the centre costs roughly 7-8 lei.
Ride-hailing apps such as Bolt and Uber operate in the city and are a reliable alternative to hailing taxis on the street.
