Quiindy

Paraguarí, Paraguay

Why visit Quiindy?

Quiindy is a town in Paraguarí department, about 109 km from Asunción via Route PY01. Its name comes from the Guaraní ky'ỹindy, referring to a settlement associated with ky'ỹi, a hot red pepper. The town's founding is traced to 1733, during the brief governorship of Manuel Agustín de Ruiloba y Calderón; the exact founding date isn't precisely recorded, so August 10 — the feast day of its patron saint, San Lorenzo — is observed as the town's anniversary. Quiindy briefly served as capital of its own department after Paraguay's first political division in 1906, gained its own municipality in 1928, and was reincorporated into Paraguarí department in 1945. To its west lies Lago Ypoá, one of Paraguay's most significant wetland nature reserves, known for its rich flora and fauna — the association has earned Quiindy the nickname "La Perla del Ypoá" (the Pearl of Ypoá). The climate is subtropical; best visited May–September.
