Why visit San Jose de los Arroyos?

San José de los Arroyos, on Route PY02 in the southwest of Caaguazú department, is one of the oldest districts in the department — founded on March 19, 1780 by governor Pedro Melo de Portugal (though some historians attribute an earlier 1555 founding to Ñuflo de Chaves) and originally named San José de los dos Arroyos ("Saint Joseph of the Two Streams"). It was established as a municipality on May 25, 1884. Its roughly 887 km² of plains, watered by tributaries of the Tebicuary Mí river, are used mostly for agriculture and cattle, sheep, horse, and pig raising, alongside cotton, yerba mate, sugarcane, and cassava cultivation. The 2022 census recorded a population of 13,926, most of it rural.
