Vaqueria

Caaguazú, Paraguay

Why visit Vaqueria?

Vaquería, also known locally as San Blas, is a district in the northern part of Caaguazú department, roughly 243 km from Asunción. The name traces to the Vázquez Díaz family, former landowners here; local Guaraní speakers rendered the surname as "Vaquedía," which evolved into "Vaquería." It became its own district on July 19, 1993, splitting off from Yhú by presidential decree. Its plains, watered by tributaries of the Yguazú River, support agriculture and livestock and are known for forest production and yerba mate cultivation — together with Yhú, it is one of the department's leading cotton producers. The 2022 census recorded 10,498 residents.
