Jaque

Darién, Panama

Why visit Jaque?

Jaqué is a corregimiento of Chepigana District, Darién Province, on the Pacific coast at the mouth of the Jaqué River, about 38 km from the Colombian border. Its 2010 population was 2,386, an Afro-Panamanian and indigenous Emberá/Wounaan mix that shapes the local traditions, music, and art. The surrounding land is low-lying mangrove swamp and tropical rainforest. Jaqué lies within the roadless Darién Gap — there is no permanent road connection to the rest of Panama, so access is by small plane (Jaqué has its own airstrip) or boat. A short boat ride south is Bahía Piñas, internationally known among deep-sea anglers and home to several world-record sportfishing catches.
