Sambu
Darién, Panama
Why visit Sambu?
Sambú is a corregimiento in Chepigana District, Darién Province, at the confluence of the Sambú and Sábalo rivers, with a population of about 931 as of the 2010 census. It has a paved airstrip and is described as the most developed settlement for many kilometers around, functioning as a base for exploring this part of the Darién jungle. The town mixes a handful of government-built buildings — a medical clinic, a church, a small runway — with traditional Emberá stilt houses; across a bridge lies its twin indigenous village, Puerto Indio. The Sambú River is known for its mangroves (five of the world's seven mangrove species grow along it), deep jungle, and traditional villages further upriver.
