Mogue

Darién, Panama

Why visit Mogue?

Mogué is an Emberá indigenous community on the Mogué River in Darién Province, established by the Emberá in the 1960s. The village promotes an ecologically sustainable way of life and has built a modest tourism presence around guided nature walks despite its remoteness. It sits within one of the most important remaining strongholds for the Harpy Eagle, Panama's national bird and the most powerful bird of prey in the Americas; nests of both Harpy and Crested Eagles have been recorded in the surrounding forest, alongside other wildlife including three-toed sloths and jaguars. Darién Province as a whole holds Central America's largest known Harpy Eagle population, and Emberá and Wounaan community members, including those from Mogué, are trained by conservation groups such as The Peregrine Fund to monitor nesting sites.
