Ngchesar

Ngchesar is a state on the eastern coast of Babeldaob, Palau's largest island, stretching from the mountainous interior spine down to the sheltered waters of Ngchesar Bay. The landscape is dominated by dense tropical forest, rolling hills, and a network of rivers and mangrove channels that feed into the Pacific. Compared to the tourist hub of Koror, Ngchesar feels thoroughly off the beaten path — a place where subsistence fishing, taro cultivation, and clan-based governance remain part of daily life.

The state takes its name from its principal village, and its population is small and widely dispersed among a handful of coastal and inland settlements. For the traveller, Ngchesar offers a rare chance to experience Palau's rural heartland: empty jungle trails, quiet river estuaries rich with birdlife, and villages where traditional practices — including the carving of storyboards and the construction of stone platforms — are still actively maintained. It is not a destination for nightlife or resorts, but for those drawn to nature, culture, and solitude, it delivers.

The best months are November through April, when the northeast trade winds bring drier weather and calmer seas along the eastern coast. This period is ideal for hiking forest trails and paddling the river estuaries without the interruptions of tropical downpours. The wet season (May–October) makes some inland tracks muddy and impassable, though the rivers and waterfalls are at their most dramatic. If you wish to participate in village celebrations, time your visit around Palau's Constitution Day (9 July) or the annual Olechotel Belau Fair, when communities across the islands gather to share food, dance, and traditional crafts.

There is no public transport within Ngchesar. The main access is via the Babeldaob circumferential road, which connects Ngchesar village to Koror (approximately 45 minutes by car) and to other east-coast states. Within the state, roads are limited and often unpaved; a 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended, particularly in the wet season. Boat travel is common among villagers — local boatmen can be arranged through guesthouses or the state office for trips along the coast and upriver. Distances between settlements are short, but road conditions mean travel times can be longer than expected.

Food in Ngchesar follows the traditional Palauan pattern: what the sea and the garden provide, the kitchen transforms. Reef fish — grilled over open flame or prepared as ulukoy (raw fish in coconut milk with citrus) — is the centrepiece of most meals. Taro, yam, and breadfruit are staples grown in family plots, while coconut crab and freshwater eels are seasonal delicacies. Dining options are limited to guesthouse kitchens and village cook-ups; there are no formal restaurants. Visitors who stay with a local family will find meals generous, communal, and deeply connected to the land and sea.

Ngchesar's social structure is built around the Palauan clan system, with high chiefs and chiefs holding traditional authority over land and village affairs. Storytelling through carved wooden storyboards remains a respected art form, and village meeting houses (bai) serve as centres for communal decision-making and cultural transmission. Music and dance — particularly the rhythmic chanting and swaying of traditional performances — are integral to celebrations.

Major events align with national holidays: Constitution Day (9 July) brings feasting and dance, while the annual Olechotel Belau Fair (November) is a territory-wide celebration of Palauan heritage. Within Ngchesar, smaller clan gatherings and harvest celebrations take place throughout the year, though these are rarely publicised and best experienced through an invitation from a host family.
