Lake Ngardok Nature Reserve

Melekeok, Palau

Why visit Lake Ngardok Nature Reserve?

Lake Ngardok Nature Reserve is a protected area centred on Lake Ngardok, Palau's largest natural freshwater lake, located in the interior of Melekeok State. The lake covers approximately 16 hectares and is surrounded by a catchment of dense tropical forest, wetland, and swamp forest. It is a critical habitat for Palau's freshwater biodiversity, including several endemic fish species, and serves as an important water source for the surrounding communities.

The reserve was established under Palau's Protected Area Network (PAN) and is managed by the Melekeok State government with support from conservation organisations. It is a haven for birdwatchers — the lake and its margins support Palau's highest concentration of waterbirds, including the Palau fruit dove, the Micronesian imperial pigeon, and a variety of migratory shorebirds. A boardwalk and viewing platform allow visitors to explore the lake edge with minimal disturbance to wildlife.

  • Boardwalk trail — an elevated boardwalk through the swamp forest, with interpretive signs about the lake's ecology.

  • Birdlife — the reserve is one of Palau's premier birdwatching sites; bring binoculars.

  • Freshwater turtles — the lake is home to several species of freshwater turtle, often seen basking on logs.

  • Birdwatching — early morning (6–8 am) is the best time for bird activity; the viewing platform is the focal point.
