Rustaq
Janūb al Bāţinah, Oman
Why visit Rustaq?
Rustaq is a historic inland city in the Al Batinah region of northern Oman, lying at the foot of the Hajar Mountains. It was once the capital of Oman during the Yaruba dynasty in the 17th century and retains a strong sense of heritage with its imposing fort and traditional souq. The city is known for its hot springs, lush date palm plantations, and proximity to dramatic wadis.
The climate is typical of interior northern Oman — very hot from May to September, with temperatures exceeding 45°C, while the cooler months from October to March are pleasant and the best time to visit. Rustaq is divided between the old town clustered around the fort and the newer commercial areas along the main road.

By Plane
Muscat International Airport (MCT) is approximately 150 km east of Rustaq, about a 1.5-hour drive via Route 13. Taxis from the airport cost around 25–30 OMR. Rental cars are available at the airport.
By Car / Road
Rustaq is easily reached by car from Muscat via Route 13 (about 1.5 hours) and from Sohar via Route 5 and Route 13 (about 1 hour). Buses operated by Mwasalat connect Rustaq with Muscat's Burj Al Sahwa bus station; the journey takes roughly 2 hours and costs around 3 OMR.
Rustaq is compact enough to explore on foot in the old centre, but a car or taxi is needed for the hot springs and outlying wadis. Local taxis within town cost 1–2 OMR per trip. Ride-hailing apps such as Otaxi are available but limited outside Muscat.

Several small restaurants around the main square serve Omani staples such as shuwa (slow-roasted lamb), majboos (spiced rice with meat), and freshly grilled fish. For a sit-down meal, Al Rawdha Restaurant offers a good selection of local dishes at moderate prices. Street-side stalls sell samosas, karak chai, and freshly baked Omani bread (khubz).
Where to drink?
Karak chai (spiced sweet milk tea) is widely available at tea stalls. Fresh fruit juices — mango, orange, and lime — are popular. Bottled water is your safest bet for drinking; tap water is not recommended.
