North Macedonia is a small Balkan country with a monumental ancient and modern heritage. Known for the stunning Lake Ohrid (UNESCO World Heritage), the capital Skopje with its controversial neoclassical revamp (Skopje 2014), and a rich blend of Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish, and Romani cultures, it is one of Europe's most affordable destinations. The country is mountainous, dotted with Byzantine monasteries and Ottoman-era bazaars, and produces some of the Balkans' best wine.
What is the landscape and climate like?
North Macedonia is predominantly mountainous, with the Šar Mountains in the west, the Osogovo and Belasica ranges in the east, and the Pelagonia valley in the south. Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa are the country's most famous natural features. The Vardar River runs through the centre, dividing the country. The climate is continental in the north (cold winters, warm summers) and Mediterranean-influenced in the south (milder winters, hot summers).

WhatsAppWhen is the best time to visit?
May–June and September–October are ideal for hiking and city sightseeing. July–August is hot but perfect for Lake Ohrid swimming. December–February suits skiing in Popova Šapka and Mavrovo. Ohrid Summer Festival (July–August) is the biggest cultural event.
Do you need a visa?
North Macedonia is not in the Schengen Area but has a liberal visa policy. EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, and many other citizens can stay visa-free for up to 90 days. A valid passport is required. Drivers need an International Driving Permit. This is general guidance — verify current requirements.

WhatsAppHow much does it cost?
The currency is the Macedonian denar (MKD). Daily budgets: budget (€25–40), mid-range (€50–80), luxury (€100+). ATMs are widely available in towns; cash is king in villages. Tipping 10% in restaurants is normal.
How do you get there?
By air: Skopje International Airport (SKP) and Ohrid St Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD) serve the country. Wizz Air is the dominant carrier. By land: Buses from Sofia, Tirana, Pristina, Belgrade, and Thessaloniki arrive daily. By rail: Limited train connections from Belgrade and Pristina.
We handle the bookings and budgeting — you just travel.
WhatsAppHow do you get around?
By bus: The main transport mode — frequent services connect all towns. By car: Rental cars are affordable; roads are fair but winding in mountainous areas. By minibus (kombi): faster shared taxis between major cities.
What are the local customs?
Macedonian hospitality is legendary — expect to be offered coffee, rakija, or food. Greetings: firm handshake. Nodding means "yes", shaking head means "no" (opposite of Bulgarian usage). Dress modestly when visiting monasteries (women cover shoulders/knees). Tap water is safe in cities.

WhatsAppIs it safe?
North Macedonia is safe for travellers. Petty theft can occur in crowded areas. Landmines from the 2001 conflict have been largely cleared but caution in remote border mountains near Kosovo is advised. Emergency: 112. Healthcare is adequate in Skopje and Ohrid.
Which regions stand out?
- Skopje Region — the capital with the Stone Bridge, Old Bazaar, Kale Fortress, and the striking Mother Teresa memorial.
- Lake Ohrid Region — the pearl of the country: a UNESCO-listed lake and town with the Church of St John at Kaneo, Samuil's Fortress, and the Ohrid Summer Festival.
- Pelagonia — the fertile valley south of Prilep, with the ancient site of Heraclea Lyncestis at Bitola, wine country of Tikveš, and the Mariovo region.
- Western Mountains — Mavrovo National Park, the ski resorts of Popova Šapka and Zare Lazarevski, and the Albanian-majority city of Tetovo with the colourful Šarena Džamija (Painted Mosque).
- Eastern North Macedonia — the city of Štip, the Osogovo Monastery, and the King Marko's Towers at Prilep.
