Why visit?

Zrnovci is a rural municipality in eastern North Macedonia, situated in the southern Bregalnica river valley directly at the foot of Mount Plačkovica. The municipality comprises three main settlements: the administrative center Zrnovci and the nearby villages of Morodvis and Vidovište. Located roughly 8 kilometers south of Kočani, the area sits on the fertile plain known for rice cultivation and vegetable farming, framed by steep granite mountain slopes to the south.

Travelers visit Zrnovci primarily for its archaeological heritage and quiet countryside setting. The village of Morodvis is built upon the ruins of Morobizdon, an important Late Antique and medieval episcopal center where excavators have uncovered four layered basilicas dating from the 5th through the 13th centuries. Outside the archaeological zone, the Zrnovska River flows down from Plačkovica's forested ridges, creating trailheads for hikers aiming to explore the upper slopes of Mount Lisec (1,754 m).

The local climate features warm, dry summers and cold, crisp winters. July and August bring daytime temperatures reaching 29°C to 33°C (84°F–91°F), while winter daytime averages hover between 0°C and 6°C (32°F–43°F) with frequent frost and mountain snowfall. Spring and early autumn bring moderate rainfall and comfortable temperatures for outdoor exploration.

When is the best time to visit?

  • May to June: Late spring brings daytime temperatures of 20°C to 26°C (68°F–79°F), blooming mountain meadows, flowing streams, and clear skies suitable for hiking and cycling.
  • July to August: Summer days are hot and dry, regularly exceeding 30°C (86°F). Outdoor sightseeing is best done during morning and evening hours, with midday heat suited for shaded riverside dining or mountain trips to higher elevations.
  • September to October: Early autumn offers dry weather, grape and rice harvesting activity across the Bregalnica valley, and mild daytime temperatures between 18°C and 24°C (64°F–75°F).
  • November to March: Cold winter conditions with temperatures frequently dipping below freezing at night (-4°C to 2°C / 25°F–36°F). Snow falls on Mount Plačkovica, and rural services operate on reduced winter hours.
