Why visit Songchon?
Songchon (Sŏngch'ŏn) is an inland county seat in South Pyongan Province, situated approximately 75 km northeast of Pyongyang. The town lies in a river basin along the Piryu River, flanked by low forested ridges and cultivated agricultural valleys. Unlike the heavy industrial hubs elsewhere in South Pyongan, Songchon centers around county administration, light manufacturing, and rural farming, with regional renown for sweet chestnut orchards.
Travel to Songchon is restricted and only permitted through authorized state tour agencies, primarily the Korea International Travel Company (KITC). Foreign travelers cannot visit independently; trips must be arranged in advance as custom extensions to broader provincial itineraries. Travelers visit to see regional light-industry pilot facilities, rural agricultural cooperatives, and local mineral hot springs.
The local climate is continental with four distinct seasons. Springs are dry and mild, summers are hot and humid with heavy monsoon rainfall in July and August, autumns bring crisp weather and clear skies, and winters are bitterly cold and dry.
