Phyeongannamto, North Korea
About Kaechon
Kaechon is a large city in South Pyongan Province, lying north of the capital, Pyongyang. With a population of around 336,000, it is one of the more substantial urban centres of the province, an industrial and mining city set amid the coal-bearing country of west-central North Korea. Like several of its neighbours, it grew through the 20th century around heavy industry and coal extraction, and the surrounding district is associated with mining and related activity.
What sets Kaechon apart for visitors is a natural attraction: the Songam Cavern, a major North Korean tourist site on the city's outskirts. This is a karst cave system reported to contain seventeen separate chambers, making it one of the more developed show caves in the country and a recognised domestic destination. The area also includes Yongpun Lake, a reservoir constructed in 1956. Together these give Kaechon a profile that combines its industrial role with a genuine sightseeing draw.
For travellers, Kaechon is one of the more interesting cities of South Pyongan precisely because of the cavern, though it is still not a frequent stop on standard itineraries. Any visit must be arranged through an authorised tour operator with guides. The mild, dry weather of spring and autumn is the most comfortable time for visiting; the cave interior, however, stays cool and stable year-round.

Ask on WhatsAppHow to reach
By Plane
The nearest airport is Pyongyang Sunan International Airport (FNJ), in the capital region to the south. All transfers are arranged by the tour operator using a chartered vehicle with guides. There is no airport bus or taxi service available to tourists.
By Train
Kaechon Station lies on the railway running north from Pyongyang and is an important rail stop for the city. Tourists do not book or board trains independently — any rail travel is arranged through the tour operator.
By Car / Road
Kaechon is reached on a guided tour by chartered bus or car. It lies north of Pyongyang, a drive of roughly one and a half to two hours along the main road. Road quality is variable. Independent driving and taxi hire are not available to visitors.
Within Kaechon, all tourist movement is by the chartered tour vehicle accompanied by guides; independent use of local transport is not permitted. The city and the Songam Cavern are a short drive apart, and the cave itself is explored on foot along its developed walkways. There are no fares, ride-hailing apps, or scams to be concerned about, but visitors must remain with their group and follow the guides' instructions on where they may go and what may be photographed — industrial sites are sensitive.
