Mount Pujon
Hamkyeongnamto, North Korea
About Mount Pujon
Mount Pujon (부전령 / 부전고원, Pujon) refers to the high mountain and plateau country of the interior of South Hamgyong Province, in northeastern North Korea, inland from the coastal cities of Hamhung and Hungnam. The Pujon area lies on the Pujon Plateau, a cold, elevated tableland in the rugged spine of the Korean peninsula, and is associated with the Pujon Pass that crosses the mountains between the coast and the interior highlands.
This is a remote, sparsely populated upland region of forests, ridges, and a harsh continental climate. The Pujon Plateau is notable in North Korea for its hydroelectric development — mountain rivers and reservoirs in the area were dammed for power generation — and for its cold-climate forestry and agriculture. For travellers, Pujon is one of the least-visited parts of the country; it offers mountain scenery rather than monuments, and access for foreign tourists is very limited.
The climate is severe and continental: winters are long, very cold, and snowy, with the plateau among the colder inhabited areas of the country; summers are short and cool. The brief warm season — roughly June to September — is the only practical time for an upland visit; deep winter is harsh.

Ask on WhatsAppHow to reach
By Plane
There is no airport in the Pujon area. The region is reached overland from the South Hamgyong coast.
By Train
By Car / Road
The Pujon area is reached by mountain road from the coastal cities of Hamhung and Hungnam, climbing inland over the Pujon Pass. The roads are mountain routes and conditions can be demanding, particularly in winter. Independent driving is not permitted; any travel here is arranged by the tour operator with assigned guides, and the area is not on standard tourist itineraries.
There is no tourist transport in the Pujon area. Any visitor would move with a tour group by chartered vehicle and on foot at designated stops. There are no taxis, ride-hailing apps, or rental options, and unaccompanied movement is not permitted.
Things to do
The principal attraction of the Pujon area is its high mountain and plateau scenery: forested ridges, the Pujon Plateau tableland, and the reservoirs created for hydroelectric power.
The Pujon area is a place for mountain scenery rather than organised activities. Where access can be arranged, the experience is one of upland landscapes — plateau, forest, and mountain passes. There is no established tourist activity programme, nightlife, or recreation infrastructure.

There are no tourist restaurants in the Pujon area. Meals for any visitor would be arranged by the tour operator. The wider South Hamgyong region is known for Hamhung raengmyon, the spicy cold noodles; upland cooking otherwise relies on rice, kimchi, soups, potatoes, and seasonal vegetables.
Cafes & Nightlife
Bottled water should be carried; tap water and untreated mountain water should not be relied upon. North Korean beer and soju are served with meals in the coastal cities. There are no cafés or bars in the Pujon area.
