About Hamhung

Hamhung (함흥시, 咸興市) is the largest city of South Hamgyong Province and the second-largest city in North Korea, on the northeastern coast facing the Sea of Japan (East Sea). It is one of the country's principal industrial centres, long associated with chemical manufacturing and heavy industry, and it sits on the Songchon River near the coast, with its port functions concentrated in the adjoining district of Hungnam.

For visitors, Hamhung is a major city that few foreign tourists reach — access is possible only as part of an official organised tour, and only some itineraries include the city. Its appeal lies in seeing a large North Korean industrial city beyond the capital: broad planned streets, monuments, the country's biggest theatre, and a famous local cuisine. Hamhung is also celebrated across the whole Korean peninsula, North and South, for its distinctive spicy cold noodles.

The climate is continental: winters are long and cold, with January and February temperatures well below freezing and little precipitation; summers are warm and markedly wet, rainfall peaking sharply in July and August during the monsoon. The most comfortable times to visit are late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October), when temperatures are mild and skies clearer.

Food & Dining

Hamhung is famous throughout Korea, North and South, for Hamhung raengmyon (랭면) — a tangy, spicy version of cold noodles, traditionally made with potato or sweet-potato starch and served with a fiery dressing rather than in broth. This is the city's signature dish and the thing to try. Beyond it, the coastal location brings seafood, and meals follow Korean lines with rice, kimchi, soups, and seasonal vegetables. Meals for visitors are taken at hotel dining rooms and designated restaurants arranged by the operator. Vegetarian dishes can sometimes be requested in advance; halal and strict gluten-free options are difficult to guarantee.

Cafes & Nightlife

Bottled water and soft drinks are supplied on tours; tap water should not be drunk. North Korean beer (such as Taedonggang) and the local clear spirit soju are commonly served with meals. Hotel bars are the usual venues for an evening drink.
