Sabon Birni is a town and Local Government Area (LGA) headquarters in northeastern Sokoto State, Nigeria, located at 13°33′40″N 6°19′30″E. Situated in the semi-arid Sahel belt along the international border with Niger Republic, the settlement functions as an agricultural trading node and district administrative hub. The LGA covers 2,354 square kilometres of flat savanna grassland and scrubland. The 2006 national census recorded an LGA population of 207,599, with recent regional projections estimating over 350,000 residents across the district.

How do you get there?

By Bus

Sokoto State Transport Authority (SSTA) and commercial passenger minivans depart daily from Central Motor Park (Old Market Park) in Sokoto city to Sabon Birni. Minibuses depart every 30 to 60 minutes once filled. The 160-kilometre journey takes 2.5 to 3 hours and costs ₦2,500 to ₦3,500 ($1.65 to $2.30 USD) per seat. Shared Peugeot station wagons and Toyota Sienna cars run the same route for ₦4,000 to ₦5,500 ($2.65 to $3.65 USD).

By Train

No train service. Sokoto State has no active railway lines or passenger rail stations. The nearest operating passenger rail terminal is Rigasa Station in Kaduna, approximately 500 kilometres southeast by road.

By Car

Sabon Birni is reached from Sokoto city (160 km southwest) via the federal A1 highway eastward through Goronyo, turning northeast along the Goronyo–Sabon Birni road. The drive takes 2.5 to 3 hours on paved single-carriageway roads with variable surface conditions and security checkpoints. From Gusau in Zamfara State (210 km south), drive north via the A12 highway through Kaura Namoda and Isa (3.5 to 4 hours). From Katsina (260 km southeast), travel west along the A9 highway via Jibia and Goronyo (4 to 4.5 hours).
