Bodinga

Sokoto, Nigeria

Why visit Bodinga?

Bodinga is a town in northwestern Nigeria's Sokoto State, seat of Bodinga Local Government Area, situated south of Sokoto city. The LGA was established in 1809 by Abdullahi dan Fodio, brother of Usman dan Fodio, making it one of the early administrative centers of the Sokoto Caliphate founded during the Fulani jihad. Bodinga LGA covers roughly 564 km² and is subdivided into 11 wards, with a traditional ruler, the Sarkin Bodinga, presiding over the area. At the 2006 census the LGA's population stood at over 175,000.

The local economy is predominantly agricultural, with farming as the mainstay alongside cattle rearing, hunting, mat making, and trade. Like the rest of Sokoto State, Bodinga sits in the semi-arid Sahel belt, with a short rainy season and a long dry season marked by the dusty harmattan wind.
