Why visit Surulere?

Surulere is a densely populated central mainland district of Lagos, known for its lively street life, cinema culture, and sporting heritage. It is home to the National Stadium (currently under renovation), the Teslim Balogun Stadium, and a corridor of film and music studios that earned it the nickname "Hollywood of Lagos." Surulere was the first major planned neighbourhood of Lagos beyond Lagos Island, developed in the 1950s–60s.

How do you get there?

About 15 minutes from Lagos Island by road via the Eko Bridge. BRT buses and taxis connect Surulere to Oshodi, Yaba, and the Island. Uber and Bolt operate in the area.

Keke NAPEP tricycles and danfo minibuses are the main local transport. The area is walkable in short stretches (especially around Adeniran Ogunsanya Street and Bode Thomas).

What are the things to do?

The National Stadium and Teslim Balogun Stadium. The Filmhouse Cinema (Imax) is a landmark. Ozone Cinemas for popular releases.

Where to eat?

Surulere has excellent street food: suya grills on Bode Thomas Street, local bukkas serving Eba and Egusi. Tantalizers for fast food. The area around Ojuelegba is famous for late-night food stalls.

Where to drink?

Bars along Adeniran Ogunsanya Street and Bode Thomas serve Star and Gulder beer. Chapman is available at most eateries. The area has a vibrant street-drinking culture at small roadside bars.

Mid-range: Hotel Bon Voyage, Ibis Hotel. Budget: many guesthouses along Adeniran Ogunsanya Street. Surulere is primarily a day-visit area with limited tourist accommodation.

What should you buy?

The Surulere Market and the Aguda Market are lively local markets. The Filmhouse area has shops and fast-food outlets.
