Zonkwa

Kaduna, Nigeria

Why visit Zonkwa?

Zonkwa is a town in southern Kaduna State, the headquarters of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area since 1989 (when the LGA was carved out of the old Kachia LGA) and, after a further 1991 subdivision, of Bajju district within it. The area is home to the Atyap people and several related ethnic groups whose languages are dialects of Tyap, alongside Hausa and other communities. Zonkwa is a commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural villages, known for its market and for ginger and maize production; a market dispute here in 1992 was the flashpoint for wider unrest across Kaduna State that year.
