Maigatari
Jigawa, Nigeria
Why visit Maigatari?
Maigatari is a Sahel border town on the Nigeria–Niger frontier, about 145 km north of Kano and part of Jigawa State since the state's creation in 1991. Its livestock market, founded in 1870, grew out of Maigatari's position as a trans-shipment point on the ancient Trans-Saharan trade route and today ranks among the largest cattle markets in sub-Saharan Africa, drawing traders in horses, camels, and cattle from Niger, Mali, Chad, and Cameroon on its weekly market day. The town's population is a mix of Hausa, Fulani, and Kanuri people.
