Umuahia
Abia, Nigeria
Why visit Umuahia?
Umuahia is the capital city of Abia State, located in southeastern Nigeria along the Enugu–Port Harcourt railway. It became the state capital in 1991 when Abia was created from Imo State during a wave of state creation in Nigeria. The city has a population of around 350,000 and is the administrative and cultural heart of the state. It played a significant role during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970) as the capital of the short-lived Republic of Biafra for a period after the fall of Enugu. The climate is tropical with a rainy season from April to October and a dry season from November to March. Umuahia is laid-back compared to Aba or Onitsha, with wide streets and a relaxed atmosphere.
