Taupō is a town on the shores of Lake Taupō, New Zealand's largest lake, in the Waikato region. It is a major tourist destination known for its lake, geothermal activity, and outdoor adventures. The town sits in the caldera of the Taupō Volcano.

Lake Taupō was formed by a massive volcanic eruption about 26,500 years ago. The surrounding area has numerous geothermal springs, the Huka Falls, and the Tongariro River. Taupō is a centre for trout fishing, skydiving, and boating.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Taupō Airport (TUO) has flights from Wellington and Auckland.

By Car / Road

Taupō is on State Highway 1, about a 4-hour drive from Auckland and 3.5 hours from Wellington. Bus services connect Taupō to major centres.

The town is walkable. A car is needed for the wider area.

Lake Taupō — New Zealand's largest lake (616 sq km). Boat cruises, swimming, and scenic views.

Huka Falls — 2 km north of town. The Waikato River forces through a 15-metre wide canyon with a spectacular waterfall. Free access.

Craters of the Moon — A geothermal walk with steaming craters and bubbling mud pools.

Wairakei Terraces — Geothermal terraces and hot pools.

Spa Thermal Park — Natural hot springs along the Waikato River.

Take a scenic cruise on Lake Taupō. Skydive over the lake. Fish for trout (Taupō is world-famous for trout fishing). Bike the Great Lake Trail. Walk the Tongariro River trails.
