Why visit Pirongia?

Pirongia is a small town in the Waikato region, located at the base of Mount Pirongia approximately 15 km west of Te Awamutu. It is the gateway to Pirongia Forest Park, a popular area for tramping and mountain biking.

Mount Pirongia (959 m) is the highest peak in the Waikato region and an extinct volcano. The forest park covers 17,000 hectares of native bush with walking tracks to the summit. The town has a rural character.

By Plane

The nearest major airport is Hamilton Airport (HLZ), approximately 40 km north-east.

By Car / Road

Pirongia is on Pirongia Road, about a 15-minute drive west of Te Awamutu and 30 minutes from Hamilton.

A car is essential for the forest park.
