Hanmer Springs

Why visit Hanmer Springs?

Hanmer Springs is a small alpine spa village tucked into the foothills of the Southern Alps, about 90 minutes north of Christchurch in the Hurunui district of Canterbury. The town grew up around its thermal pools — Māori knew the springs as Waitapu ("sacred waters"), and the first European bathhouse opened on the site in 1883. Today the resort still revolves around the same geothermal source, but the surrounding plantation forest, mountain‑bike trails, jet boating on the Waiau River and a clutch of cafés and lodges have turned it into one of the South Island's most popular short‑break destinations.

The village itself is compact and walkable, laid out along Amuri Avenue and the side streets that branch off it. The thermal pools complex sits at the northern end of Amuri Ave, with most cafés, motels and shops within a five‑minute stroll. Beyond the village, Conical Hill rises immediately to the north and the Hanmer Forest Park stretches west, threaded with walking and biking tracks.

Hanmer Springs is genuinely a year‑round destination. Summer (December–February) is warm and dry, ideal for biking, walking and jet boating, with daytime highs around 22–26 °C. Autumn brings spectacular colour from the introduced larches and oaks of Hanmer Forest. Winter (June–August) is cold, often frosty, and perfect for soaking in the pools after a day at the small Hanmer Springs Ski Area or nearby Mt Lyford. Spring can be changeable but quiet and good value.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Christchurch International Airport (CHC), about 145 km / 1 hr 50 min south by road. There is no direct shuttle from the airport to Hanmer Springs; most travellers either pick up a rental car at CHC or pre‑book a seat on the Hanmer Connection coach (which departs from the Christchurch Transport Centre, not the airport — a metro bus or taxi connects the two).

By Car / Road

From Christchurch, take SH1 north to Waipara, then SH7 inland through the Weka Pass and Culverden, turning off at the Waiau River bridge onto SH7A, which leads directly into the village. The drive is about 135 km and takes around 1 hr 45 min on good sealed road. From the West Coast, Hanmer is roughly 200 km / 3 hours from Greymouth via Lewis Pass on SH7 — a scenic alpine crossing.

By bus, the Hanmer Connection runs daily between the Christchurch Transport Centre and Hanmer Springs, with seats bookable online. InterCity coaches running Christchurch–Nelson via the Lewis Pass stop at the SH7/SH7A junction (Hanmer Junction); from there it is a 10 km onward transfer into the village.

The village is easily walked end to end in 15 minutes, and most visitors do not need a vehicle once they have arrived. There is no urban bus service. Hanmer Springs Adventure Centre on Amuri Avenue rents mountain bikes, e‑bikes and scooters for getting out to the forest trails. A handful of taxi and shuttle operators serve the town for transfers to trailheads, the ski field or the airport — book ahead, especially in winter, as availability is limited. Standard Uber/Ola‑style ride‑hailing apps do not operate here. There are no common scams to be aware of; this is a small, low‑key resort town.

What are the things to do?

  • Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa, 42 Amuri Avenue. The reason most people come — a complex of open‑air thermal pools at varying temperatures (including sulphur pools fed directly from the spring and freshwater pools), plus private pools, sauna/steam, water slides and an on‑site day spa. Daily 10:00–21:00. Adult NZD 35, senior (60+) NZD 22, child (5–15) NZD 20.

  • Conical Hill Lookout, trailhead at the top of Conical Hill Rd. A steep 30–45 minute climb through Douglas fir to a viewing platform with a panorama over the Hanmer Basin and the Southern Alps. Free, open daylight hours.

  • Hanmer Forest Park, immediately west of the village. Plantation forest of redwoods, larches and Douglas fir laced with short interpretive walks (Woodland Walk, Waterfall Track) as well as longer ridge routes. Free.

  • Hanmer Heritage Forest information and pioneer interpretation panels along the Forest Walks loop — a quick primer on the area's forestry history.

  • Molesworth Station (seasonal, summer only), accessed via Jacks Pass north of town. New Zealand's largest farm and a Department of Conservation recreation reserve, open to vehicles roughly late December to early April. Free; high‑clearance vehicle recommended.

  • Soak in the thermal pools — the signature Hanmer experience, best after dark in winter when steam rises off the water.

  • Walking & tramping. The Hanmer Forest tracks range from the easy 30‑minute Woodland Walk to the half‑day Mt Isobel circuit (1,319 m, exposed alpine tops — check weather).

  • Mountain biking. Hanmer is one of Canterbury's better MTB hubs, with purpose‑built trails in the forest park covering grades 2–5. Trail maps and passes are available at the Hanmer Springs i‑SITE on Amuri Avenue.

  • Jet boating on the Waiau River with Hanmer Springs Adventure Centre. Departures typically 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, with extra runs on weekends and holidays. NZD 130 adult / NZD 70 child (under 13) / NZD 350 family (2 adults + up to 3 children); 50% discount for Christchurch Tram & Gondola Annual Pass holders.

  • Quad biking. Three operators in town run guided trail rides through high‑country farmland — half‑day options are the most popular.

  • Bungy and rafting at the historic Waiau Ferry Bridge, about 15 minutes south of the village.

  • Skiing & snow play (winter). The community‑run Hanmer Springs Ski Area on Mt St Patrick is a 40‑minute drive on a steep gravel access road; Mt Lyford Alpine Resort (about 1 hr east) is a more developed alternative.

  • Spa treatments at the on‑site spa within the thermal complex — book ahead in school holidays.

Where to eat?

New Zealand café culture is alive and well in Hanmer, with strong coffee, brunch menus and gastropub‑style evening dining. Lamb, venison, salmon and South Island craft beer feature on most menus. Vegetarian options are standard; gluten‑free is widely catered for; halal options are limited and best confirmed in advance.

  • Powerhouse Café, Jacks Pass Rd — local favourite for breakfast and brunch; counter cabinet of baking, eggs benedict, big coffees. Mains NZD 18–28.
  • Saints Café, Restaurant & Bar, 6 Jacks Pass Rd — gourmet pizzas (Moroccan lamb, chicken and cranberry), an extensive à‑la‑carte menu, and a "Stonegrill" option where your meat finishes cooking on a 400 °C stone at the table. Mains around NZD 30.
  • No. 31 Restaurant, 31 Amuri Ave — set inside a heritage cottage, a more upscale evening option with a seasonal South Island menu. Mains NZD 35–45.

  • Hanmer Springs Bakery, 18 Conical Hill Rd — for cheap, hearty pies, sausage rolls and filled rolls under NZD 10; ideal trail food.

Where to drink?

The village winds down early by city standards, but there are a few reliable spots for a drink. Saints Café, Restaurant & Bar on Jacks Pass Rd is the closest thing Hanmer has to a nightlife venue, with regular live music and a kitchen and bar that often run past 22:00. Monteith's Brewery Bar on Amuri Ave is the go‑to for craft beer on tap. For a quieter glass of Waipara wine — the local subregion 45 minutes south is known for riesling and pinot noir — most restaurants offer a solid by‑the‑glass list. Tap water throughout Hanmer Springs is treated, safe to drink and excellent quality.

What should you buy?

Hanmer is not a shopping destination, but the village has a good cluster of small independent stores along Amuri Avenue and Conical Hill Road for picking up gifts, outdoor gear and edible souvenirs. Look for mānuka honey, Canterbury merino knitwear, sheepskin slippers and possum‑merino blends, and locally made skincare using thermal water from the springs (sold at the pools complex gift shop). The Hanmer Springs Farmers Market runs on selected Saturday mornings in summer at the village green, with regional cheeses, preserves, baking and produce from the Hurunui. Bargaining is not part of New Zealand retail culture — prices are fixed.
