Lyttelton is a port town on the northern shore of Lyttelton Harbour, approximately 12 km south-east of Christchurch city centre. The town is nestled in the caldera of an ancient volcano, giving it dramatic hillside terrain and harbour views.
Lyttelton has a rich maritime history as the main port of Christchurch. The town was severely damaged in the 2010–2011 Canterbury earthquakes but has undergone a vibrant revitalisation. Today Lyttelton is known for its waterfront dining, boutique shopping, the Christchurch Gondola, and its lively Saturday morning farmers' market. The climate is temperate with warm summers and cool winters.

By Plane
The nearest major airport is Christchurch Airport (CHC), approximately 25 km north-west.
By Car / Road
Lyttelton is a 15-minute drive from Christchurch city centre via the Lyttelton Tunnel (SH74). Regular bus services connect Lyttelton to Cathedral Square in Christchurch.
The town centre is compact and walkable, though very hilly. A car is useful for exploring the harbour area. The Diamond Harbour ferry connects Lyttelton to the other side of the harbour.

Lyttelton Port — New Zealand's second-largest container port, with cruise ship berths.
Lyttelton Farmers' Market — Saturday mornings at the Lyttelton Recreation Centre. Popular for fresh produce, artisan foods, coffee, and crafts.
Christchurch Gondola — Cable car rising 500 metres above Lyttelton Harbour for panoramic views of the city, the harbour, Banks Peninsula, and the Southern Alps.
Timeball Station — A historic timeball station (partially rebuilt after the earthquake).
Lyttelton Museum — Maritime and local history exhibits.
Cave Rock / Te Ana o Hineraki — A volcanic rock formation at the entrance to Lyttelton Harbour.
Ride the Christchurch Gondola. Shop at the Saturday farmers' market. Walk the Bridle Path from Lyttelton to Heathcote (historic settler route). Take the ferry to Diamond Harbour and walk to Godley Head. Dine at the waterfront restaurants. Try the craft beer at local breweries.

Lyttelton has become a culinary destination with excellent waterfront dining. Restaurants on Norwich Quay and London Street serve modern New Zealand cuisine, seafood, and international fare. The Saturday market has food stalls.
