Why visit Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park?
Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site (part of Te Wahipounamu) in the central South Island. Established in 1953, the park covers 707 square kilometres and is home to 22 of New Zealand's 23 named peaks over 3,000 metres high. Aoraki / Mount Cook at 3,724 metres is New Zealand's highest mountain, and Mount Tasman at 3,497 metres is the second highest.
The park is renowned for its natural environment, alpine scenery, and pristine landscapes. The Aoraki / Mount Cook Village is the main visitor base, located within the park near the shores of Lake Pukaki. The park is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
The climate is alpine with cold winters and cool summers. Weather can change rapidly. The Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park Visitor Centre is at 1 Larch Grove, open 8:30AM–5PM daily.

By Plane
Mount Cook Airport is near the village, with flights from Queenstown via Glenorchy Air. The nearest major airports are Christchurch Airport (CHC), 330 km north-east, and Queenstown Airport (ZQN), 210 km south-west.
By Car / Road
From Twizel, take SH80 sealed road to Mount Cook Village (about 1 hour). The park is roughly 3 hours from Christchurch and 3.5 hours from Queenstown. InterCity and GreatSights buses operate from Queenstown, Lake Tekapo, and Christchurch. The Hermitage Hotel and Haka House (YHA) are the drop-off points. Daily fares from NZ$200 (Tekapo) to NZ$250 (Christchurch/Queenstown).
Entry to the park is free, including parking at the Hooker Valley and Kea Point track car parks.
Walking is the main way to get around the village and tracks. Light aircraft and helicopters offer scenic flights and ski access.
What are the things to do?
Tasman Lake and Glacier (Haupapa / Tasman Glacier) — Tasman Valley Road. New Zealand's longest glacier at 23.5 km. A 650-metre walk from the car park leads to the viewpoint. The glacier has been retreating due to climate change.
Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre — 89 Terrace Rd (inside The Hermitage Hotel). Daily 8:30AM–8PM. A museum focused on the region's aviation and climbing history, plus a planetarium and 3D movie theatre. Adult $25, child $15.
Aoraki / Mount Cook — New Zealand's highest peak. Viewpoints throughout the village and along walking tracks.
Hooker Valley Track — The most popular walk, starting from White Horse Hill Campground. 5 km to Hooker Lake with three swing bridges and views of Mount Cook. Allow 3 hours return.
Tasman Glacier View Track — A short walk to the glacier viewpoint.
Kea Point Track — A walk to a viewpoint overlooking the Hooker Valley and Mount Cook.
Glacier Sea Kayaking — Kayaking on Mueller Lake with views of Mount Cook and the Mueller Glacier. From $120–$133 pp.
Scenic Flights — Air Safaris and Glenorchy Air offer flightseeing over the park. The Grand Traverse flight covers Aoraki/Mount Cook and Westland National Parks.
Mountaineering — Guided climbs of Mount Cook and other peaks available via Alpineguides and Alpinerecreation. Introductory courses available.
Skiing — Heliskiing in the Ben Ohau and Liebig Ranges, and ski touring based at alpine huts.
Stargazing — Tours at the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre planetarium.
