About Oldenzaal

Oldenzaal is a historic town in the Twente region of Overijssel, just 10 km north of Enschede and close to the German border. It is best known for the Plechelmusbasiliek, a magnificent Romanesque basilica that is one of the finest in the Netherlands. The town's old centre has a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere with market squares and historic buildings.

How to reach

By Train

Oldenzaal station is on the regional line between Enschede and Hengelo, with trains at least twice hourly. From Enschede it is 10 minutes; from Hengelo 8 minutes.

By Car

The A1 motorway is just south of the town (exit 32). Driving from Amsterdam takes about 1 hour 40 minutes.

  • Plechelmusbasiliek — A stunning 12th-century Romanesque basilica with a massive westwork, one of the oldest churches in the Netherlands; free to enter

  • Oldenzaal old town — A small but well-preserved centre with the Palthehuis (a 17th-century merchant's house, now a hotel)

  • De Heimsheek — A nature reserve just outside town, good for walks

  • Carnaval — Oldenzaal is one of the best places in Twente to experience Carnaval (February/March), with parades, costumes and street parties

  • Cycle to Losser — a scenic 10-km route through Twente farmland
