Overijssel

Overijssel is a province in the eastern Netherlands, named after the river IJssel which forms part of its western boundary with Gelderland. The province stretches from the flat polders of the Kop van Overijssel in the northwest to the gently rolling hills of Salland and the forested landscape of Twente in the southeast. It is a region of Hanseatic trading cities, canal-side villages, vast nature reserves and a strong regional identity — less touristed than the western Randstad, but rich in history and outdoor pursuits.

Overijssel can be divided into four distinct areas: Salland in the west (with the provincial capital Zwolle and the medieval city of Deventer), Twente in the southeast (the industrial and cultural heart around Enschede and Hengelo), the Vechtdal in the north (a scenic river valley popular for holidays) and the Kop van Overijssel in the northwest (a low-lying peat and lake district including the famous village of Giethoorn). The province borders Germany to the east, making it a gateway for cross-border exploration.

For travellers, Overijssel offers the rare Dutch experience of actual hills in the Sallandse Heuvelrug, the fairy-tale waterways of Giethoorn, beautifully preserved medieval city centres, Europe-level wetland nature in Weerribben-Wieden, and a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere that rewards slow travel by bike or boat.

Late spring through early autumn (May–September) is the best time to visit, with temperatures of 17–23 °C and long days ideal for cycling, hiking and exploring the province's nature parks. The heathlands of Sallandse Heuvelrug bloom purple in August, making it a particularly scenic time for walks across the hills.

Summer (June–August) draws visitors to Giethoorn's canals and the beaches along the recreation lakes. The Dickens Festival in Deventer (December) transforms the city centre into a Victorian-era scene and is one of the province's most distinctive events. Carnival (February/March) is celebrated with gusto in Twente, though less so in the traditionally Protestant western parts of the province.

Autumn offers quieter trails and golden colours in the forests of Twente and the Vechtdal. Winter is cold (1–6 °C) but atmospheric, with frost-covered landscapes in the nature parks and Christmas markets in the cities.

Overijssel has a well-connected rail network. Zwolle is the main hub, with Intercity services to Amsterdam (1 hr 15 min), Schiphol (1 hr 25 min), Utrecht (50 min) and Groningen (1 hr). The east–west line connects Deventer (20 min from Zwolle), Almelo, Hengelo and Enschede. Direct trains from Schiphol and Amsterdam Centraal serve Deventer, Almelo, Hengelo and Enschede in about two hours. Regional trains connect smaller towns including Kampen, Hardenberg and Oldenzaal.

Buses (operated by Keolis and Arriva) serve the villages and rural areas; the OV-chipkaart works throughout. For reaching Giethoorn, bus services run from Steenwijk station (itself reachable by train from Zwolle in 20 minutes).

Cycling is the quintessential way to experience Overijssel. The province is mostly flat (except the Sallandse Heuvelrug hills) and has an excellent network of dedicated cycle paths and numbered junction routes. Distances are manageable: Zwolle to Deventer is 30 km, Deventer to Enschede is 60 km, and Zwolle to Giethoorn is 25 km. Bikes can be rented at most train stations.

• Kampen — A beautifully preserved Hanseatic city (Hanzestad) on the IJssel river with numerous historic landmarks and a striking medieval city gate.
• Hengelo — An industrial city near Enschede, serving as a regional hub for Twente.
• Almelo — A Twente city with a castle and canal-side centre, linking the Twente region to the rest of the province.
• Giethoorn — The famous "Venice of the North," a car-free village where thatched-roof farmhouses are connected by canals, bridges and walking paths.
• Steenwijk — A small historic town serving as the gateway to the Weerribben-Wieden wetlands.
• Oldenzaal — A Twente town known for its Carnival celebrations and Romanesque church.
• Ommen — A holiday resort on the Vecht river, popular with campers and nature lovers, on the edge of forested countryside.
• Hardenberg — A town in the Vechtdal region with a growing recreation area and access to river landscapes.
• Blokzijl — A tiny harbour village on the former Zuiderzee, with a picturesque waterfront and links to the Weerribben.
• Staphorst — A traditionally conservative Protestant village known for its distinctive folk culture and painted farms.
• Haaksbergen — A Twente town near the German border, surrounded by forests and heathland.
• Weerribben-Wieden National Park — One of Europe's most significant freshwater wetlands, a vast mosaic of lakes, reed beds, peat bogs and floating meadows, home to otters and herons.
• Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park — A rolling heathland and forest landscape with some of the highest hills in the western Netherlands, offering panoramic hiking and cycling.

Overijssel's food culture reflects the hearty, no-frills Dutch eastern tradition. Stamppot — mashed potato combined with vegetables such as sauerkraut, kale or endive, served with smoked sausage (rookworst) or meatballs — is a staple. Pannenkoeken (large, thin pancakes) are a regional favourite, with dedicated pannenkoekenhuizen (pancake houses) found throughout the province, often at scenic rural locations.

In Twente, the German influence is noticeable in the local food culture. Regional breweries produce craft beers that are available at cafés and restaurants. Twente also produces small quantities of wine at local vineyards. Fresh asparagus (witte asperges) is a seasonal highlight in spring (April–June), served classically with ham, egg and butter sauce.

Traditional bakeries sell krentenwegge, a large currant bread that is a Twente specialty, traditionally given to celebrate births and milestones. The Deventer koek (spiced honey cake) is a nationally famous product with centuries of history.

The Dickens Festival in Deventer (December) is one of the province's most beloved events, when the historic Bergkwartier neighbourhood transforms into a scene from Charles Dickens' novels, with costumed characters, market stalls and theatrical performances.

Carnival is a major celebration in Twente (February/March), with parades and festivities in Enschede, Hengelo, Oldenzaal and other towns. The region's strong musical tradition is reflected in numerous local brass bands and choirs. Deventer hosts a major book market (Boekenmarkt) in August, one of the largest in Europe.

Overijssel has a rich heritage of folk traditions, particularly in communities like Staphorst where traditional dress and customs have been preserved. The province's Hanseatic history is celebrated in Kampen and Deventer with heritage events and maritime festivals. Enschede's cultural scene includes the contemporary art museum Rijksmuseum Twenthe and regular performances at the Wilminktheater.

4. Canoe the Weerribben-Wieden wetlands — Paddle through Europe's largest accessible lowland peat swamp, navigating narrow channels between reed beds, floating bogs and open lakes rich in birdlife and otters.

5. Cycle the Vechtdal route — Follow the river Vecht from Ommen through forested countryside, passing historic estates, small villages and scenic river bends on dedicated cycle paths through one of Overijssel's most picturesque landscapes.
