Overview

Flevoland is the Netherlands' youngest province, carved from the former Zuiderzee through a monumental 20th-century land reclamation project known as the Zuiderzee Works. Almost entirely man-made, this province consists of two polders: the Noordoostpolder (drained in the 1940s) and the larger Flevopolder (drained in the late 1960s). What was once open sea is now a grid of farmland, modern cities, and Europe's most remarkable experiment in planned urban development.

The province is defined by contrasts. Almere, in the west, is a booming edge city of Amsterdam with daring modern architecture and a population density rivaling the Randstad. Lelystad, the provincial capital, offers aviation museums, a replica 17th-century VOC ship, and the vast Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve. In the north, the Noordoostpolder surrounds the former islands of Urk — a tight-knit fishing community with its own dialect and anthem — and Schokland, a UNESCO World Heritage site. With its perfectly flat landscape, rectilinear canals, and experimental urban design, Flevoland offers a unique destination for anyone fascinated by human ingenuity over nature.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Flevoland is from May to September, when the weather is mild and outdoor attractions like the Oostvaardersplassen, Bataviawerf, and watersports on the Veluwemeer are at their most accessible. Summer also brings major events: Lowlands Festival (August), Defqon.1 (June), and Walibi Holland's peak season. Spring (April–May) is quieter and ideal for cycling. Autumn offers excellent birdwatching at the Oostvaardersplassen as migratory species pass through. Winters are cold and can be windy across the flat polders.

Getting Around

The Flevolijn/Hanzelijn railway line runs across the Flevopolder, connecting Almere, Lelystad, and Dronten with frequent Intercity and Sprinter services onward to Amsterdam, Schiphol, Utrecht, and Zwolle. The Noordoostpolder has no railway station — you reach it by bus from Lelystad or Dronten, or by road from Friesland or Overijssel. The A6 motorway runs the length of the province, connecting Almere, Lelystad, and Emmeloord before joining the A7 in Friesland. Biking is possible but distances are long and the landscape can be monotonous; the best cycling infrastructure is in Almere, which has a dedicated bike highway (spoorbaanpad).

Cuisine

Flevoland's culinary identity centres on freshwater fish from the IJsselmeer, including eel, perch, and pikeperch. Urk's harbour restaurants serve fresh smoked eel and kibbeling (battered cod pieces). The province also produces potatoes, onions, and grains from its fertile polder soils. Flevoland has a growing number of farm shops selling local produce, cheese, and apple products. For fine dining, Almere and Lelystad offer diverse international options, while Urk's fish restaurants are the province's most authentic food experience.

Culture & Festivals

Flevoland punches above its weight in festivals. Lowlands Festival (August) at Walibi Holland's Evenemententerrein in Biddinghuizen is one of the Netherlands' biggest music and arts festivals. Defqon.1 (June) is a major hardstyle electronic music festival drawing tens of thousands. Walibi Holland itself operates year-round as a theme park. Urk retains a strong Protestant fishing-community culture with its own dialect and anthem, and its annual Urker Visdagen (Fish Days) celebrate the town's maritime heritage. Schokland's UNESCO-listed former island village is a fascinating cultural-historical site.
