Lukla

Koshi, Nepal

Why visit Lukla?

Lukla is a small town in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal, famous worldwide as the gateway to the Mount Everest region. Its Tenzing-Hillary Airport (LUA) is one of the most dramatic and famous mountain airstrips in the world, serving as the starting point for the Everest Base Camp trek. Situated at 2,860 m, the town is built along a hillside above the Dudh Koshi River and consists mainly of trekking lodges, gear shops, and restaurants catering to the steady flow of trekkers.

Lukla has a cool mountain climate with warm summer days, cold nights, and heavy precipitation during the monsoon (June–September). The best trekking seasons are March–May and September–November. The town was largely rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 2015.
