Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

Koshi, Nepal

Why visit Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve?

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a protected area in the eastern Terai of Nepal, encompassing a vast stretch of wetlands, grasslands, and riverine forests along the Koshi River floodplain. Established in 1976, it is a Ramsar site of international importance and one of the premier bird-watching destinations in Asia. The reserve protects the last remaining wild population of the arna (wild water buffalo) and hosts hundreds of bird species, including rare waterfowl, waders, and birds of prey. The Koshi Barrage at the southern end regulates the river's flow.

The climate is humid subtropical with very hot summers (April–June), a heavy monsoon (June–September), and mild winters (November–February). The best bird-watching season is November to March when migratory birds flock to the wetlands. The reserve covers 175 km² and is accessed primarily by boat and on foot.
