Shadaw
Kayah, Myanmar
Why visit Shadaw?
Shadaw (Shar Daw) is a remote township in eastern Kayah State, bordering Shan State to the north and Thailand's Mae Hong Son Province to the east. The town sits in the Karen Hills east of Loikaw, positioned between the Pawn River (Nam Pawn) valley and the main gorge of the Thanlwin (Salween) River.
Travelers venture toward Shadaw for its deep river valleys, pine-covered mountain ridges, and rural Kayah communities. Because the area is isolated with no commercial tourism infrastructure, independent travel requires checking current travel authorization and regional road access before heading out from Loikaw.
The climate is tropical monsoon shaped by terrain ranging from 500 to 1,500 meters (1,640 to 4,920 feet) above sea level. Highland areas stay noticeably cooler than the river valleys throughout the year, with sharp temperature drops after sunset.

By Bus
No commercial intercity bus lines run directly to Shadaw. Shared four-wheel-drive pickup trucks and passenger line jeeps depart from the Loikaw Highway Bus Station in the morning when security and road conditions allow. Departures are unscheduled and fill on demand. One-way fares cost 12,000–18,000 MMK ($3.50–5.50 USD) for the 3- to 4-hour trip.
By Train
No train service. The nearest rail terminal is Loikaw Railway Station, 80 km (50 miles) west, operated by Myanma Railways on the branch line connecting via Aungban and Thazi.
By Car
Shadaw connects to Loikaw via the unpaved Loikaw–Shadaw route (National Highway 17 extension toward Tar Ta Mawt), covering 80 km (50 miles). The mountain drive takes 3 to 4 hours in dry weather. A high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is mandatory due to deep ruts, seasonal stream crossings, and steep grades. Checkpoints along the route require photo identification and regional travel authorization.
By Air
No air service. The nearest air facility is Loikaw Airport (LIW), located 80 km (50 miles) west by road. Domestic carriers including Myanmar National Airlines operate flights connecting Loikaw to Yangon (RGN, 1 hour flight time), subject to current airline operations.
No taxi companies or ride-hailing apps operate in Shadaw. Getting around town and nearby settlements relies on walking or hiring local motorcycle taxis, which charge 2,000–5,000 MMK ($0.60–1.50 USD) per short ride. For travel between outlying valley settlements, travelers negotiate day hire of a four-wheel-drive pickup truck from local drivers (approx. 40,000–70,000 MMK / $12–21 USD per day).
