Hpasawng is the seat of Hpasawng Township in Bawlakhe District, Kayah State, recording a population of around 25,600 in the 2014 census, with the Kayah (Karenni) as the majority group alongside Bamar, Shan, and Pa-O minorities. The township is historically known for the Mawchi Mine, once the world's leading source of tungsten in the 1930s. The area is heavily forested and mountainous.
The climate is tropical monsoon, with the best weather from November to February.
