Mandimba

Niassa, Mozambique

Why visit Mandimba?

Mandimba is a border settlement in eastern Niassa Province, Mozambique, situated 6 km east of the Chiponde border post with Malawi. Functioning primarily as an overland trade and transit node, the town handles constant cross-border traffic between Malawi and northern Mozambique. Street currency traders, known locally as kwacheiros, operate along the primary thoroughfare alongside general stores, produce stalls, and shops retailing Chinese-made motorcycles.

Most travelers arrive in Mandimba during overland transit between Malawi and regional Mozambican hubs including Cuamba, Lichinga, and Nampula. The town provides basic practical infrastructure for transit travelers, including Millennium BIM ATMs accepting international cards, modest guesthouses, fuel pumps, and informal food stalls.

Set on the interior Niassa plateau, Mandimba experiences warm temperatures throughout the year. Average daily temperatures range from 22°C to 28°C during the dry season, rising above 35°C in October and November prior to the summer rains.
