Lichinga
Niassa, Mozambique
Why visit Lichinga?
Lichinga is the capital of Niassa Province, perched on a highland plateau at about 1,200 metres above sea level, giving it a noticeably cooler climate than the rest of northern Mozambique. Originally founded as Vila Cabral during Portuguese colonial rule, it serves as the administrative and economic hub of the vast and sparsely populated Niassa interior. The town is small, laid-back, and functions primarily as a gateway for adventures to Lake Niassa and the Niassa Special Reserve. Its high-altitude setting means mild temperatures year-round — a welcome relief from the heat of the lowlands.

By Plane
Lichinga Airport (VXC) is served by LAM (Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique) with flights from Maputo (about 2.5 hours) several times per week. The airport is about 3 km from the town centre; a taxi into town costs around 300 MZN.
By Train
A passenger train runs from Cuamba to Lichinga on the CFM Northern line, with about four departures per month. The journey takes approximately 6–8 hours through forested highlands. Check with the local station for current schedules.
By Car / Road
Lichinga is reachable from Cuamba via the EN320 (about 200 km, 3–4 hours, mostly unpaved). A 4x4 is recommended, particularly in the rainy season. The road from the south connects via Mandimba and the EN8.
Lichinga is walkable in the compact centre. Bicycle taxis (known as bicicleta-táxi) and motorcycle taxis are the most common local transport, with fares of 10–20 MZN for short trips. A few chapas (minibus taxis) serve the outskirts.
What are the things to do?
