About Zaisan Memorial

The Zaisan Memorial sits on a hilltop in the southern part of Ulaanbaatar, overlooking the Mongolian capital. Built in the Soviet era, it honours Soviet and Mongolian soldiers who died in the Second World War and commemorates the historic alliance and friendship between Mongolia and the Soviet Union. The monument's most distinctive element is a circular concrete structure whose inner wall carries a brightly coloured mosaic mural depicting scenes of that shared history — from the 1939 Battle of Khalkhin Gol to the defeat of Nazi Germany and the cooperation between the two countries.

The memorial's enduring appeal for visitors, however, is its position. Reached by a long flight of steps, the hilltop offers one of the best panoramic views of Ulaanbaatar, the Tuul River valley and the surrounding hills. It is a popular spot at sunset, when the city lights begin to come on, and a place where locals and tourists alike pause to take in the scale of the capital. A short distance away stands a large statue of the Buddha, adding to the cluster of sights at the foot of the hill.

The memorial lies in the Zaisan area of southern Ulaanbaatar, a district that has seen considerable modern development. Ulaanbaatar's climate is sharply continental: summer (June–August) is the mildest season and the best time for the climb and the views, while winter is bitterly cold and the steps can be icy. Clear days give the finest panoramas; haze and dust can reduce visibility, particularly in spring.

How to reach

By Plane

Ulaanbaatar is served by Chinggis Khaan International Airport (IATA: UBN), roughly 50 km south of the city. Transfer to the centre is by taxi, hotel transfer or airport shuttle bus, taking around an hour or more depending on traffic. From central Ulaanbaatar, the Zaisan Memorial is a short taxi ride to the south of the city.

By Train

Ulaanbaatar Railway Station, on the Trans-Mongolian line, connects the capital with domestic destinations and with international services towards Russia and China. The station is a taxi ride from the memorial.

By Car / Road

Ulaanbaatar is Mongolia's road hub, connected to provincial centres by paved highways and rougher routes; long-distance buses arrive at the city terminals. Within the city, the Zaisan Memorial is easily reached by car or taxi via the southern districts; parking is available at the foot of the hill.

The memorial itself is reached on foot by climbing a long flight of steps to the hilltop; allow time and a steady pace, especially in cold or hot weather. To reach the area from elsewhere in Ulaanbaatar, the city bus network has low flat fares paid by transit card, and taxis and ride-hailing apps are widely used and convenient for the trip south. Agree fares or use app pricing before riding, and carry water for the climb.

Food & Dining

There are no major restaurants at the memorial itself, though the modern Zaisan district at the foot of the hill has developed cafés, shopping and dining options. Mongolian staples to try elsewhere in the city include buuz (steamed mutton dumplings), khuushuur (fried meat pastries) and tsuivan (stir-fried noodles).

  • Budget — Local guanz and canteens in the surrounding districts serve cheap, filling Mongolian plates.
  • Mid-range — The Zaisan area and a short ride towards the centre offer a range of Mongolian and international restaurants and cafés.
  • Upscale — Finer dining and hotel restaurants in central Ulaanbaatar provide smarter Mongolian and international menus.

Central Ulaanbaatar and the Zaisan district have some vegetarian and international options; standard Mongolian fare is meat-heavy, so ask about meat-free dishes.

Cafes & Nightlife

The Zaisan district and central Ulaanbaatar have numerous cafés serving good coffee and tea, including suutei tsai, the salty Mongolian milk tea. Mongolia produces its own beers and vodka, widely available in bars and restaurants. Tap water in Ulaanbaatar is best avoided for drinking; stick to bottled or boiled water, and carry water for the climb.

What to buy

Souvenir and snack vendors sometimes set up near the foot of the hill, but the memorial is not a shopping destination. For souvenirs, cashmere and crafts, head to central Ulaanbaatar — the State Department Store and shops around Sükhbaatar Square — or the sprawling Naran Tuul Market. Prices in shops and malls are fixed; at markets, polite bargaining is expected.
